What the Media Is Not Telling You About Protecting Yourself From Coronavirus

Did you know that coronaviruses are nothing new? The common cold is a coronavirus, for example. For the most part coronaviruses are just another nuisance, an inconvenient part of being human

But this one is different. Known as a “novel coronavirus” and officially called COVID-19, this disease has spread exponentially across nearly the entire world. What started in Wuhan China with several cases now teeters on the brink of becoming a global pandemic. Over 100,000 people have been infected — including, as of 3/9/20, 500 in America. And those are very conservative numbers, given the dismal lack of testing being done in many areas.

Questions, questions, and more questions…

In the US, people haven’t really known what to do about all this. Trust the government, CDC, and mainstream media? Wait for a vaccine, which may take 12-18 months? Stockpile food? A glance at social media or the comments section of any recent news article shows our interpretation of things is pretty divided.

It seems like our collective faith in the government (who just weeks ago was saying this is no worse than the flu and refusing to test symptomatic patients!) is at an all-time low.

But amidst it all, there is still some good news. There’s one thing you can begin doing right now to protect yourself from the coronavirus. It’s not being mentioned by the CDC or on the news — though it probably should be.

That one thing? You can boost your immune system.

While we’re not promising it’ll make you impervious against COVID-19, boosting your immune system certainly won’t hurt — and could definitely help. We know from the virus’s development in China, Italy, and now the US that it seems to target those with compromised immune systems. Younger people with healthy immune systems almost always exhibit more mild symptoms.

With all that said, here are 5 proven, research-backed ways to strengthen your body’s immune system!

With all that said, here are 5 proven, research-backed ways to strengthen your body’s immune system!

1. Stay Hydrated?

This may seem obvious, but it’s true: staying hydrated may help your immune system function at its best.

Dehydration, on the other hand, can weaken the immune system by slowing down its ability to transport important antibodies throughout the body. And a good amount of research shows that many people are chronically dehydrated. Don’t be one of them.

Hydration is important for those who come down with the virus, too. COVID-19 patients onboard the Diamond Princess were given water + electrolyte beverages like Gatorade and encouraged to amply hydrate. We’d suggest water with sugar-free electrolyte mixes or even water with a sprinkle of sea salt.

2. Get Some Sun — Or Vitamin D3

Vitamin D is pretty amazing. It’s a vitamin, a hormone, and even a steroid. It’s one of the few macro-vitamins we humans make from the sun. In addition to all that…vitamin D is inextricably tied to immune function.

According to this [2011] study, “Vitamin D can modulate the innate and adaptive immune responses.” On the other hand, “deficiency in vitamin D is associated with increased autoimmunity as well as an increased susceptibility to infection.”

The bolding is ours, but the message is theirs…and it’s pretty clear. Adequate vitamin D levels are needed to ensure the immune system functions at its best.

But many of us are deficient, especially at this time of the year. That may even explain why viruses like the flu are so seasonal — without enough vitamin D, the body has a harder time responding to illness!

Getting outside in full sun is the most effective way to raise your body’s vitamin D levels. If you can’t do that, consider D3 supplementation, at least until the weather gets warmer. Your immune system will probably thank you.

3. Vitamin C

Vitamin C’s immune-boosting properties have been advocated for ages. Its potential value against the coronavirus is no less impressive.

Talking to Orthomolecular Medicine News Service, Dr. Andrew Saul says this about vitamin C: “The coronavirus can be dramatically slowed or stopped completely with the immediate widespread use of high doses of vitamin C.”

Emphasis on “high doses.” Some research indicates that up to thousands of milligrams of vitamin C per day may be needed to really boost serum levels. Those without access to IV vitamin C — i.e, most of us — may do well with liposomal vit. C and its higher absorption rates.

4. CBD Oil

CBD may also support the body’s natural immune response. How? Some research shows it may boost the body’s levels of glutathione, an internal antioxidant which plays many important roles in immune health. CBD may actually raise glutathione more effectively than vitamin C!

Just as promising, CBD seems to have a selective impact on the immune system. In most cases it amplifies things — but in cases where the system is overactive (autoimmune diseases, for example), CBD actually quells it. In theory this may reduce the chances of the ‘cytokine storms’ causing many current COVID-19 fatalities.

Once again, this is just theoretical. But taking CBD throughout this epidemic certainly won’t hurt! So consider adding immunity-booster to the long list of CBD’s potential qualities…and to your shopping cart.

And if you’re already taking CBD oil, just keep at it. Keeping your endocannabinoid system healthy remains one of the best ways to deal with the ups-and-downs of life, COVID-19 included

5. Other Premium CBD Products CBD ___

Those who want to keep their immune systems primed should also know that not all CBD is created equal. The CBD from some brands is radically better than others! Athletes interested in CBD can keep their bodies healthy with GUDBODY, a brand geared towards fitness enthusiasts. (Given COVID-19’s impact on the lungs, keeping your cardiovascular health up isn’t such a bad idea!)

Wildrose Jane is another premium brand we stand behind. They even have CBD for your pets — and pets are susceptible to COVID-19 too, just FYI. Above all else, look for a CBD brand that prioritizes product quality, consumer education, and customer service. You can’t go wrong with those traits.

If all this seems like a lot…think of it as an investment. Above investing in stocks or real estate, invest in your immune system and its future outcome! After all, the healthcare systems we’ve come to rely on may be too overburdened to do it for you.
